Originally written for an exhibition Jean-Luc Nancy curated at the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon in 2007, this book addresses the medium of drawing in light of the question of form—of form in its formation, as a formative force, as a birth to form. In this sense, drawing opens less toward its achievement, intention, and accomplishment than toward a finality without end and the infinite renewal of ends, toward lines of sense marked by tracings, suspensions, and permanent interruptions. Recalling that drawing and design were once used interchangeably, Nancy notes that drawing designates a design that remains without project, plan, or intention. His argument offers a way of rethinking a number of historical terms (sketch, draft, outline, plan, mark, notation), which includes rethinking drawing in its graphic, filmic, choreographic, poetic, melodic, and rhythmic senses. If drawing is not reducible to any form of closure, it never resolves a tension specific to itself. Rather, drawing allows the pleasure in and of drawing, the gesture of a desire that remains in excess of all knowledge, to come to appearance. Situating drawing in these terms, Nancy engages a number of texts in which Freud addresses the force of desire in the rapport between aesthetic and sexual pleasure, texts that also turn around questions concerning form in its formation, form as a formative force. Between the sections of the text, Nancy has placed a series of “sketchbooks” on drawing, composed of a broad range of quotations on art from different writers, artists, or philosophers.

Written by two artists, each with more than 20 years of teaching experience in London art schools, A Foundation Course In Drawing is an exciting and carefully designed drawing course for artists of all levels. The book's five parts cover life drawing, still-life drawing, landscape drawing, abstract drawing and drawing systems. Each part is further broken down into sections, which progress from the most basic skills, such as how to hold a drawing implement, to more advanced concepts, such as capturing the folds and textures of drapery and creating harmony in abstract compositions. Throughout the book, detailed explanations and a structured series of practice exercises introduce each subject, which is looked at in different ways, through such elements as shape, form, space, light, texture, movement and time. Procedures, techniques and practical tips are also provided for describing each way of analyzing the subject. As each of the five parts stands alone, novice artists can work through them in any order, or can take a broader approach, moving through the first section of each part, followed by the next section, and so on. More advanced artists can turn directly to sections on problem areas for supplementary instruction and practice. A Foundation Course In Drawing offers an innovative, comprehensive approach to the experience of drawing, and will help artists of all abilities discover ways to confidently express their ideas, feelings and responses.

Utilizing as few words as possible, but presenting a tremendous variety and volume of illustrations, this all-in-one guide details the fundamentals of drawing in its various phases and fields. In the opening pages, the author points out the first step on the road to creative achievement: artists must learn how to see people and things in terms of pictures, then master the techniques needed to express themselves on paper. Geared to newcomers and yet still beneficial for more experienced artists, Moranz’s illuminating advice covers everything from nude and draped figures to the art of portraits and sketching animals. He covers the effective use of various mediums, including pencil, charcoal, pen, and wash. Plus, he offers helpful tips on developing a sixth sense about perspective, the basics of composition, reflecting light and shadow, and more. There's even a chapter on taking drawing one step further — from a pleasurable hobby to a successful commercial venture.
