Book Description: The International Association of Legal Science organized, in 1985, a col loquium on the International Enforcement of Human Rights. The meeting took place from August 28-30, in Heidelberg, on the premises of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences. Professor Andre Tune, Presi dent of the Association, presided. The undersigned acted, respectively, as General Rapporteur for the colloquium and as Director of Scientific Work of the Association. The present volume contains the repons submitted to the colloqium. In addition, a paper on Approaches to Human Rights in Asia, written by Mrs. Yamane, is included. The reports were discussed by the participants during the meeting. (See the list of panicipants on page 159). The discussion was not recorded and is not here summarized. RUDOLF BERNHARDT JOHN ANTHONY JOLOWICZ This volume owes its appearance to Professor Bernhardt and to his colleagues of the Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg. That fact cannot, however, be al lowed to prevent it from containing an acknowledgment of a debt of grati tude owed by the International Association of Legal Science. As Director of Scientific Work of the Association at the time of the colloquium, I therefore gladly take this opponunity to make two observations.

Book Description: This title was first published in 2003. The series of volumes prepared by UNESCO for teaching human rights at higher education level comes to a conclusion with the publication of this volume. "Human Rights: International Protection, Monitoring, Enforcement" takes an institutional approach to the international protection of human rights, examining first the United Nations system, which may be seen as universal, and then analysing regional systems of protection. A useful source of information on the protection of human rights, the volume can also be employed as a practical guide to the use of existing procedures in the defence of human rights.

Book Description: This timely literature review analyses the most influential legal scholarship on the enforcement of human rights at institutional level, both regional and international. It includes discussion of charter-based and reporting monitoring procedures as well as the role of high commissioners and treaty bodies. The review later focuses on the movement towards establishing quasi-judicial procedures, the judicial enforcement of human rights and interim measures, concluding with a thoughtful consideration of the potential for universal judicial enforcement - a world court of human rights. This insightful study will be an essential research resource for those studying, working or teaching in this important field.

Book Description: In this book the interaction between the rights guaranteed in the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) and private international law has been analysed by examining the case law of the European Court of Human Rights (the Court) and selected national courts. In doing so the book focuses on the impact of the ECHR on the three main issues of private international law: jurisdiction, applicable law and the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments. Next to a list of cases consulted and a comprehensive bibliography, the book offers brief introductions to PIL and the ECHR for readers who are less familiar with either of the topics. This makes the book not only a valuable tool for specialists and practitioners in the fields covered, but at the same time a well-documented basis for students and starting researchers specializing in either or both directions.

Book Description: Whilst the establishment of the African human rights system was a good gesture that signalled the recognition of the value and essence of international human rights in the continent, a continuous study of the system has become necessary. This is particularly in light of the fact that the continent is in desperate need of well established and effective regional human rights enforcement mechanisms. At the moment, the regional human rights system is stuck between prospects and pitfalls because of the gap that exists between the promise of human rights and their actual realisation. By all means, this trend needs to be reversed. The main objective and purpose of this book is to underscore the challenges besetting the effective enforcement of international human rights law in Africa and the prospects and promises of an effective regional human rights system.
