Book Description: If a religion cannot attract and instruct young people, it will struggle to survive, which is why recreational programs were second only to theological questions in the development of twentieth-century Mormonism. In this book, Richard Ian Kimball explores how Mormon leaders used recreational programs to ameliorate the problems of urbanization and industrialization and to inculcate morals and values in LDS youth. As well as promoting sports as a means of physical and spiritual excellence, Progressive Era Mormons established a variety of institutions such as the Deseret Gymnasium and camps for girls and boys, all designed to compete with more "worldly" attractions and to socialize adolescents into the faith. Kimball employs a wealth of source material including periodicals, diaries, journals, personal papers, and institutional records to illuminate this hitherto underexplored aspect of the LDS church. In addition to uncovering the historical roots of many Mormon institutions still visible today, Sports in Zion is a detailed look at the broader functions of recreation in society.

Book Description: In the years since 1945, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has grown rapidly in terms of both numbers and public prominence. Mormonism is no longer merely a home-grown American religion, confined to the Intermountain West; instead, it has captured the attention of political pundits, Broadway audiences, and prospective converts around the world. While most scholarship on Mormonism concerns its colorful but now well-known early history, the essays in this collection assess recent developments, such as the LDS Church's international growth and acculturation; its intersection with conservative politics in recent decades; its stances on same-sex marriage and the role of women; and its ongoing struggle to interpret its own tumultuous history. The scholars draw on a wide variety of Mormon voices as well as those of outsiders, from Latter-day Saints in Hyderabad, India, to "Mormon Mommy blogs," to evangelical "countercult" ministries.

Book Description: Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 10: August, 1907 The Doctrine and Covenants is uniform in purpose and defin ite in doctrine, - teaching us how to live and sanctify our bodies, establishing the genuine system of divine religion, by which we may measure our steps with assurance of salvation and reward for individual effort. Instead of infant damnation, we have infant purity and salvation through the blood of Christ. Little children are pure, - of such is the kingdom of heaven. We do not believe that men will be punished for Adam's transgression, that men are destined to be saved or lost irrespective of worthiness and obedience, that men will be saved by faith or grace alone, or that the principles of the gospel are temporal and evolutionary. We do not believe that men can obtain the authority of the priest hood by scholastic or reverential training, or that they can assume the role of self-appointment by usurping the authority of the apostles of old, - repudiating God's right and power to reveal him self or minister to the children of men.
