Lange Zeit war China eine Weltmacht, die umgeben war von Tributstaaten. Dann wurde es zum Spielball der imperialistischen Mächte. Die Weltmacht China genügte sich selbst und schottete sich ab. Heute ist das Bild des Westens von China geprägt von scheinbaren Widersprüchen - kommunistische Staatsführung und marktwirtschaftliche Entwicklung, Buddhismus und staatlicher Atheismus, Tradition und Moderne, ein Land – zwei Systeme, arme Bauern und reiche Unternehmer. Aber der Übergang zwischen beiden Gegensätzen ist fließend, wie es das Yin-Yang Prinzip der chinesischen Philosophie beschreibt. Dem Ausland präsentiert sich China heute gerne als ein weltoffenes Land, das sich dem Weltmarkt öffnet. Ausländische Touristen können nach China reisen und Chinesen können ins Ausland reisen, auch wenn für sie noch mehr Beschränkungen existieren. War China früher fast ausschließlich Empfängerland, wird es nun allmählich zum Entsenderland. Um es in den Worten der Medien zu formulieren – der Drache erwacht, der Riese erhebt sich. Napoleon hatte einst gesagt: „Wenn China erwacht, erzittert die Welt!“ Der chinesische Outbound-Reisemarkt ist ein Sektor, der seit Jahrzehnten wächst und dem ausgezeichnete Zukunftsperspektiven eingeräumt werden. Doch der Outbound-Reisemarkt, der sich in die zwei großen Bereiche der Geschäftsreisenden und der klassischen Urlauber aufteilen lässt, ist eng verknüpft mit der wirtschaftlichen und politischen Zukunft Chinas. Schätzungen der WTO rechnen bis 2020 damit, dass jährlich 100 Millionen Chinesen ins Ausland reisen werden – soviel wie heute aus ganz Asien.
