Book Description: This thesis describes three human studies and one rat study investigating the role of dietary factors, on calcium, bone metabolism and blood pressure regulation, and interrelationships between blood pressure, urinary Ca and bone metabolism in healthy subjects and type II diabetics. In healthy adults, blood pressure >140/90 mmHg was associated with increase bone resorption, but not increased urinary Ca. In type II diabetics, diastolic blood pressure >85 mmHg was associated with increased bone resorption and urinary Ca excretion. Baseline serum Mg may influence the response of bone metabolism to increased Mg intake. Results of the re-analysis of Doyle et al. (1999) showed Mg supplementation had no effect on biomarkers of bone resorption or bone formation in females with normal or low-normal serum Mg. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure was significantly higher in subjects with serum Mg levels below the median. In another human intervention trial, we investigated whether dietary supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) influenced markers of Ca and bone metabolism in healthy adult men. Despite increasing CLA levels in plasma, CLA supplementation had no effect on Ca and bone metabolism in healthy adult men. In an animal feeding trial, the effect of the nutrient profiles of the DASH diets on blood pressure and bone composition and metabolism in normotensive (WKY) and hypertensive (SHR) rats was investigated. Blood pressure or bone mineral content was unaffected by diet in either strain of rat. SHR rats fed the combination diet had lower levels of markers of bone resorption and bone formation than rats fed the control diet. Markers of bone turnover in WKY rats were unaffected by diet. Lin et al. (2003) reported the findings of their study, investigating the effect of the DASH diet on Ca and bone metabolism and this study was critically reviewed.
