Book Description: This is Part II of a synchronic study of the traditional urban vernacular spoken in an area determined by Bolton's urban field of influence. It contains a detailed account of the morphology and syntax of the dialect, based upon extensive fieldwork. Together with Part I, it constitutes the fullest grammar of an English dialect published to date. The distinctiveness of the Bolton dialect suggests that grammatical variation among English dialects has generally been underestimated by scholars, no doubt chiefly as a result of their purposes and theoretical concerns, methodologies, and the specific field techniques that they have employed. This is a major conclusion of the study, and has some bearing on the theory of English dialectology, and English linguistics more generally. The need for extensive recordings of free conversation is made evident, if numerous syntactic features are to be apprehended, and fully explained. It also emerges that urban environments are not simply melting pots, in which all distinctive linguistic characteristics are levelled out.

Book Description: This volume brings together eleven studies on the history of language and writing in the North Sea area, with focus on contacts and interchanges through time. Its range spans from the investigation of pre-Germanic place-names to present-day Shetland; the materials studied include glosses, legal and trade documents as well as place names and modern dialects. The volume is unique in its combination of linguistics and place-name studies with literacy studies, which allows for a very dynamic picture of the history of language contact and texts in the North Sea area. Different approaches come together to illuminate a major insight: the omnipresence of multilingualism as a context for language development and a formative characteristic of literacy. Among the contributors are experts on English, Nordic and German language history. The book will be of interest to a wide range of scholars and students working on the history of Northern European languages, literacy studies and language contact

Book Description: Corpus Linguistics and the Analysis of Sociolinguistic Change demonstrates how particular styles and varieties of language are chosen and represented in the media, to reveal changing language ideologies and sociolinguistic change. Drawing on a corpus of ads broadcast on an Irish radio station between 1977 and 2017, this book shows how corpus linguistic tools can be creatively employed, in conjunction with frameworks and concepts such as audience and referee design and indexicality, and examines how accents and dialects (vernacular and prestige) are exploited in the ads across the decades. In addition, this book: illustrates the key principles of corpus design for sociolinguistics studies and offers a framework for future diachronic corpus studies of advertising on social media; provides a model for analysing corpus data at both inter-varietal and intra-varietal levels in terms of both accent and dialectal features and explores the efficacy of using particular corpus linguistic tools; identifies key factors which can be used by researchers as evidence for sociolinguistic change and links these factors to relevant theories and frameworks; demonstrates how corpus tools can be used to compare advertising discourse with naturally occurring discourse, with particular reference to markers of (pseudo) intimate discourse. Building on the growing body of research relating to variation and change in Irish English, this book is key reading for researchers and advanced students undertaking research within the areas of sociolinguistics and corpus linguistics.
