Book Description: The work described in this thesis is published in Iyer et al., May 27, 2016, of the Astrophysical Journal, Volume 823, Number 2. Until last year, 19 hot Jupiter-like exoplanets have previously published transmission spectra observed using the Hubble Space Telescope, WFC3-G141 near-IR grism. Each of the spectra that make up this sample have been observed, reduced and analyzed by different authors throughout the last decade, which has resulted in a very heterogeneous sample set. To address this concern, we worked on undertaking a homogeneous analysis to acquire a measurement-error debiasing of the magnitude of the H2O signature in units of atmospheric scale height Hs, defined as spectral modulation due to H2O. For the planetary spectra that have previously reported H2O detection, (10 out of 19), the spectral modulation ranges from 0.9-2.9 Hs with an average of 1.8 ± 0.5 Hs. Additionally, we also show that the individual transmission spectra of the planets in this sample can be coherently averaged to produce a characteristic spectrum where its shape as well as spectral modulation of H2O are consistent the range of H2O mixing ratios and cloud top pressures describing these planets. This characteristic spectrum for the first time allows us to study these planets as a class objects and look for common patterns. Using the assumption that all these reported planets have an H2O mixing ratio in the cloud-free regime, we find a minimum H2O abundance of the characteristic spectrum to be 17 ppm (+12 ppm/ -6 ppm). Using this value to generate theoretical forward models to each of the H2O bearing planets, we show that in the observed spectra, clouds or aerosols block at least half of the atmospheric column which would otherwise be sampled by transmission spectroscopy if it were truly a cloud free atmosphere. In conclusion, there is evidence that the terminator-region clouds with sufficient opacity is opaque in slant-viewing geometry in hot Jupiter atmospheres, and can be quantified as covering ~1/2 of its scale height.

Book Description: Electrical processes take place in all planetary atmospheres. There is evidence for lightning on Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, it is possible on Mars and Titan, and cosmic rays ionise every atmosphere, leading to charged droplets and particles. Controversy surrounds the role of atmospheric electricity in physical climate processes on Earth; here, a comparative approach is employed to review the role of electrification in the atmospheres of other planets and their moons. This book reviews the theory, and, where available, measurements, of planetary atmospheric electricity, taken to include ion production and ion-aerosol interactions. The conditions necessary for a global atmospheric electric circuit similar to Earth’s, and the likelihood of meeting these conditions in other planetary atmospheres, are briefly discussed. Atmospheric electrification is more important at planets receiving little solar radiation, increasing the relative significance of electrical forces. Nucleation onto atmospheric ions has been predicted to affect the evolution and lifetime of haze layers on Titan, Neptune and Triton. For planets closer to Earth, heating from solar radiation dominates atmospheric circulations. Mars may have a global circuit analogous to the terrestrial model, but based on electrical discharges from dust storms, and Titan may have a similar global circuit, based on transfer of charged raindrops. There is an increasing need for direct measurements of planetary atmospheric electrification, in particular on Mars, to assess the risk for future unmanned and manned missions. Theoretical understanding could be increased by cross-disciplinary work to modify and update models and parameterisations initially developed for a specific atmosphere, to make them more broadly applicable to other planetary atmospheres. The possibility of electrical processes in the atmospheres of exoplanets is also discussed.
