Book Description: In the words of John Paul II, «A faith which does not become culture is a faith that has not been received, not thoroughly thought (through), nor fully lived out». It is for this reason that inculturation hermeneutics has become a useful reflective tool for many African students of Theology. In this work, the author argues that the concept of salvation in evangelical Christian thought as postulated in the works of the French Reformer John Calvin and that of African Traditional Religions do not connote the same idea nor lead to the same goals. In spite of the basic differences, he states that symbols, metaphors and some practices from the traditional religions of Africa can be employed as hermeneutical tools for the explanation of concepts of the Christian faith. The author therefore concludes that the Anlo-Ewe traditional religious practice of nugbidodo-ritual reconciliation best explains Christian salvation as man's reconciliation with God and constitutes a basis for the healing, deliverance, and a socio-economic advancement of the individual and the entire community.

Book Description: This work makes three important contributions to Calvin studies and, more generally, adds to the growing literature on anthropology in the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Reformation. First it challenges the prevalent bias toward focusing on Calvin's doctrine of God to the neglect of his doctrine of humankind. Second, it provides an original and provocative interpretation of the overall structure of Calvin's anthropology. And third, Engel's analysis of specific issues (imago dei, reason, and faith, the will, immortality and resurrection) present helpful insights into those areas of Calvin's thought which remain controversial. 'John Calvin's Perspectival Anthropology' succeeds T.F. Torrance's Calvin's Doctrine of Man as the second full-length examination of Calvin's anthropology.

Book Description: In many ways, Christian education in the Presbyterian Church in Egypt was deeply influenced by public education in Egypt. One of the negative consequences of such influence is the significant lack of developing and using critical thinking as a basic element of the process. While multiple factors—educational and theological—contribute to forming it, this problem manifests itself in many ways. The present research deals with the lack of critical thinking as a central problematic reality of the Christian education process in the Presbyterian Church in Egypt. In order to illuminate and address this problematic situation, Richard Osmer’s understanding of Christian education as practical theology is used to bring into dialogue American philosopher, psychologist, and educator John Dewey and reformer and theologian John Calvin. In light of this dialogue, not only the lack of critical thinking but also multiple other dimensions of the problematic situation of Christian education in the Presbyterian Church in Egypt are illuminated. Lack of democracy, lack of the use of experience, lack of creative pedagogies, lack of practical reason, and lack of theology from the process are some of these dimensions. Adapting Osmer’s comprehensive approach to Christian education as practical theology, Samy Estafanos proposes a “holistic approach towards Christian education” that aims at transforming education into a reconciling process.

Melanchthon Und Der Calvinismus

Mahlmann, M. Engammare, W. Janse, W. van't Spijker und A. J. Beck. Melanchthons relationship with Calvin and Calvinism has often been examined in the past, mainly with regard to the theological issues of the Reformation: the Heidelberg Catechism, the doctrine of predestination, the problem of free will, the question of the Lords Supper, exegesis etc. It is common knowledge that these issues had already been summarized in the polemical rhetoric of Crypto-Calvinism during the Reformation. The state of research in a further cultural and historical context however takes on a completely different appearance, since this is a context which is not determined only by the common ground and issues in theology but also by the constitutive conditions of scholarship and culture in the early modern period. The articles in this volume examine the question of Melanchthons influence on the cultural history of the early modern period in the Calvinism of the countries in which Romance languages were spoken and of the English-speaking world.
